Learn The Secrets To Starting an Acting Career

How can one establish a good acting career?

It is more than just knowing how to act and portray a character- it is a challenge at how to please other and make people appreciate about how good an art acting can be.

This is one of the most challenging concept about acting that, once mastered, can effectively catapult one to stardom and fame.

But before one begins to take on this challenge, take note of the following considerations which are common obstacles or pitfalls to an acting career that can discourage many to pursue it.

Here is a common checklist for actors;

- if you are new to show business and do not know where to go to for professional help, try to look around for reputable casting firms who could provide you with expert advice on how to evaluate your acting skill and what good roles may be suited for you.

- Make the most out of audition calls, since this is where you may be able to test yourself for roles that are available in the market.

- Sometimes it helps to work freelance, however, having an agent gives you more opportunities in landing opportunities for audition and casting calls. Take note that agents are the first ones to know of any available roles that are being cast for movies or shows.

- Choosing a good casting or agent can indeed be a good help, especially for amateur actors who still do not have much idea about how to scout for good acting roles, unlike when working freelance, you often tend to decide on what roles that are readily available, regardless of your personal preferences, whewreas if you employ an agent to represent you, producers usually call on agents to help them provide the most suitable talent for the roles they hope to be portrayed.

- There is always the risk of devoting too much time to balance between work and the demands of an acting career, especially when juggling a professional career and an acting venture.

- Always be sure to keep your word and always maintain a decent and professional demeanor. It does not matter whther you are an artist or not, you are still expected to maintain a professional air.

- Always make sure to prepare materials that you may need to promote yourself like audition tapes, resumes, headshots, portfolios, etc. Keep it handy all the time, you’ll never know when a good opportunity comes up.

- Always keep yourself updated and headstrong by joining acting workshops and advanced acting programs or projects that will help you continue to polish your acting skills, preparing you for better chances of landing good roles in the future.

- Make it a point to always put your best foot forward and always make sure that you are always ready to take on a variety of roles and characters, which is a good sign of your acting versatility and dynamic personality.

- Not everybody can make it successfully in an acting career, regardless of how hard one should try. Be ready to take on criticism and even skepticism, but taking it more of a constructive feedback rather than a disappointing twist.

- Always focus on things that you think that will always let you propel your acting career.

These are but may not be all available tips to establish a good acting career, but one that will surely help you get on your way to stardom and celebrity status.

Why Do People Love to Read About Celebrity Gossip ?

Celebrity Gossip and celebrity scandal are everywhere. When it comes to stars and celebrities we love to talk about them. Not many people can resist a good old gossip preferable about someone that is known. Celebrity gossip and news can be found in magazines, on the radio, and on the television screen.

Celebrity Gossip is a great way to take a break from the more serious news that is found both locally and around the world. As a society we like to follow the actions of those celebrities we see in media. We talk about them. After all, do you really want to miss out seeing the next outrageous outfit that Paris Hilton is going to wear?

Do you feel a twinge of guilt about buying a gossipy celebrity magazine? Don’t. Tell yourself instead that you are merely honoring a respectable ancestral survival mechanism by engaging in celebrity gossip. This reveals lots about our culture. Celebrity gossip helps us tackle our social anxieties (what if we started breaking the rules like some Celebrity) and celebrity gossip tells us something about our dreams (only if I were to be rich and careless like Angelina).

Celebrity Gossip and our past.

Humans as a species live in groups, so it is essential for individuals to learn what other members of the tribe are up to and what this means. In our modern world with its instant communications celebrities make up part of that group. We feel we know them even if we have not even met them in real life. This drives us to engage in gossip about the celebrities. This begs the question :

Did celebrity gossip just start recently or has celebrity gossip been around for a long time?

Long ago reputations were important, we are talking, middle ages here, even more so than they are today. Women needed their husband to uphold their reputation – if a woman felt she was losing their husband, she would vocally accuse her competitor of trying to take him away by calling her a whore. You could even be punished for gossiping!

The punishment was various – but included a scold’s bridle, a metal band that fitted over the head and had a 3.5 inch protrusion which was inserted in the mouth and lay flat against the tongue. One sure way of making sure they did no more scolding.

Going back further. “If primate intelligence originally evolved to solve complex social problems, such as keeping track of shifting coalitions or countering against deception, then it’s possible that present-day human intelligence carries a legacy of this history”. So it seems that even in history mankind has been engaging in different forms of celebrity gossip.

Celebrity Gossip Today.

As we get to the point where we have less and less friends in common, the only way we can engage relationships and communication is to try to find people who are known to both of us – celebrities, public figures, sports stars, and media figures of all kinds. This allows us to gossip about a common theme – the well known celebrity. Now that communities include virtual ones, we engage in virtual celebrity gossip by e-mail, text or Internet. Most of the time this is for pure entertainment and the forming of social bonds. This need-to-know what happed to so and so could explain the enduring popularity of soap operas and other gossipy media. This human need for celebrity gossip was shown in Scotland in a recent human group experiment.

An interesting discovery about Celebrity Gossip

Scottish Psychologists devised a mind test similar to the game known as “Chinese whispers”,

They gave 10 volunteers four different texts to read, and then asked them to write down what they could remember. Their efforts were then passed to another set of volunteers as passages for them to learn, and the process was repeated four times.

The final version of the texts were then compared against the original – and the psychologists found that “celebrity gossip-like” information, involving deception and infidelity and the interactions of other people, was most easily remembered and relayed with the most accuracy.

However, the volunteers were hardly able to recall purely descriptive information about individuals or their surroundings. These results suggest that humans attach a high importance to personal and social data. Just the type of data we find when we engage in celebrity gossip. Could this information be used in the future to educate our children? Who knows but finding out about other people’s private lives and interactions is a key for human survival. We must also remember that celebrity gossip does have a serious side to it.

Celebrity Gossip and work

It’s all to do with being a human being. You simply will not survive unless you can gossip about the people you know, for a lot of us that means celebrities. We just love to exchange information about them and find out more about them. This need also comes to the fore at work.

In any organization, you’ve got a boss that’s one person you need to know about – their idiosyncrasies, their peculiarities and their relationships. As a result most office gossip is focused upwards – it’s looking up the hierarchy. This is another reason why we gossip about celebrities so much as they appear to be above us in the human hierarchy.

Celebrity Gossip and Public Relations

Some businesses use this information to great effect. In the Public Relations business it’s important to control the flow of information and when that information is released to the public. Public Relations companies need to know when and where to show the public important information about their clients who are incidentally often celebrities that they may be representing. Most importantly is where people gossip about celebrities.

To find out where this gossip takes place, one enterprising PR company compiled a top ten list of the places that people are most likely to engage in celebrity gossip…

Top 10 places to engage in gossip.

1. Restaurants
2. On the train or Tube
3. Friends telling friends
4. On our mobiles voice and text
5. At Meetings
6. In crowded bars
7. With the cabdriver
8. With their coach or personal trainer
9. Supermarket queues
10. Unisex toilets.

Do you see how those same PR companies use this information to target us. All those strange advertisements we see about upcoming celebrity events in train stations and on tube escalators, it gets us talking.

What if there was no gossip?

What would happen if we stopped gossiping about people? Just imagine if all celebrity gossip, were to stop tomorrow, what would we talk about? Who would we talk about?

Without celebrities or people we see as above us it would be an imperfect world – the most obvious reason is that about 80% of talk that occurs now, simply wouldn’t happen. That’s about how much of our conversation is celebrity gossip. Imagine no celebrities to gossip about! Society would break down, because the information we get from other people is fundamental to managing our relationships with them. We need to know who the friends, fools and the scoundrels are.

So to sum up we need to talk and to talk means to gossip. Celebrity gossip is a great way to take a break from the more serious news that is found around us. As a society we like to engage in celebrity gossip and follow the actions of those celebrities we see in the media light. It helps us bond. Celebrity gossip is here to stay. Just imagine seeing the next outrageous outfit that Paris Hilton is going to wear on the front of a magazine! Would you ignore it? Or talk about it?

The Best Types of Headshots That Most Actors Take Advantage Of

Different Types of Headshots for Actors

A headshot is an essential marketing tool for actors. It is an 8 x 10 photograph, used to help secure acting work, representation or auditions. Actors, or their representatives, submit these photographs to casting directors, agents and other industry professionals in the hopes that opportunities will arise for the actor.

Beginning actors may want to stick with traditional headshots—headshots that are simple, black-and-white, and friendly. However, advanced actors may want to use a headshot that more closely follows their career path.

There are several forms of headshots that break away from the basic, traditional headshot. Among these headshots are the commercial headshot, the theatrical headshot and the composite.

Composites

A composite is a collection of photographs or images that are collectively placed on a single 8×10 sheet. A composite allows the actor to display different looks and facial expressions. For example, in one image, the actor may be professional, depicting a lawyer or business person. And, in another image, the actor may look like a family man, dressing in a simple shirt and jeans.

This collection of different appearances shows the actor’s range and ability. It demonstrates how successfully the actor can pull off different looks or character depictions. This expands the actors work opportunities.

Commercial Headshots

A commercial headshot is a headshot that actors specifically use to get acting jobs in television commercials. As such, commercial headshots depict an actor in the same manner as actors usually appear in commercials. In a typical commercial, actors are usually smiling and happy, bubbling over with joy as they attempt to sell an advertiser’s product. An actor who regularly performs in commercials must be able to be warm, friendly, inviting, interesting, funny and cheerful. Therefore, a commercial headshot must be all those things, too.
In many cases, a composite may be used as a commercial headshot. That’s because, as mentioned above, a composite allows the actor to display many different looks. This allows the actor to have more potential opportunities. For instance, on the actor’s composite card, he might have a sporty, athletic look and a business professional look. These images may help him land a commercial for Nike and a commercial for Men’s Warehouse, all done by using the different looks on a single composite card.

Theatrical Headshots

A theatrical headshot is a headshot that actors use to obtain acting jobs in theatre or theatrical productions. The difference between a theatrical headshot and, say, a commercial headshot is the focus. Whereas a standard headshot may depict the actor as a regular person, warm and friendly, a theatrical headshot may zero-in on a specific quality or character that the actor is good at portraying. For example, an actor may be great at portraying the shy, quiet type. So, the actor may get a theatrical headshot that portrays the actor looking shy and quiet. The actor is able to use the headshot to go after theatrical roles that require an actor who can portray a shy, quiet, introverted person.

Actors should always consult their talent agents before they spend any money getting headshots. But most importantly, actors should review their career goals to determine which kind of headshot and marketing program will work best for them.

Australian actors learn to follow in the footsteps of Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Naomi Watts. TVI Actors Studio, America’s largest acting school and resource center for actors, returns to Australia July 9 through 12 to teach Australian actors how to market themselves in America. TVI Chief Executive Officer and former agent to Hollywood stars, Alan Nusbaum will present a multi-media presentation, “The Business of Acting in the States” in Sydney on July 9 and Melbourne on July 11 and 12.

“Australian actors are so curious about how to make it in America.” Nusbaum states, “I will teach them how to take control of their own careers and become ‘actor-preneurs,’ actors that are entrepreneurial about their careers.”

Nusbaum has been teaching internationally in the UK and Europe for several years and has recently branched out to include Australia and New Zealand. He created TVI after representing several Hollywood stars such as Sandra Bullock, Courtney Cox, Jerry Orbach, and Tonya Pinkens. “There was a clear need for actors to learn how to manage their career and run it like a business. Most actors come from an artistic background and rarely have business know-how.”

Do You Know What The Screen Actors Guild Does?

What Is Screen Actors Guild?

The Screen Actors Guild is an actor labor union that was established in 1933 to represent actors who perform in film. Like all actor unions, the Screen Actors Guild, or SAG for short, protects actors from unfair treatment and ensures that actors receive fair and just compensation for their work. SAG, the largest of all actor unions, is responsible for setting the minimum amount of money an actor should be paid, also known as scale. SAG also sets guidelines for working conditions and for the amount of time an actor is to be expected to work.
Getting into the Screen Actors Guild can be a humbling and emotional experience for many actors. Most actors work really hard for many years to become established actors. For many, getting a union membership card, or SAG Card, signifies that an actor has “arrived” and become a respected, professional actor.

How Does SAG Help Actors?

The Screen Actors Guild helps actors in a number of ways. In particular, SAG provides benefits and contractual representation, as well as other services that help actors further their careers.

Benefits Include:

SAG negotiates the minimum rates at which their members must be paid for SAG-recognized projects. Collects compensation for actors when use of their work is unauthorized or misused. Health benefits for members Retirement benefits, such as 401k and pension Alerting actors to auditions and other opportunities News alerts

How Do I Join SAG?

Joining SAG is usually not very easy. Joining SAG requires that an actor has worked on a SAG-recognized film project. The trouble is, an actor cannot work on a SAG-recognized film project if he or she is not a member of SAG. However, there are a number of ways to join the union even if you are not a member:

An actor can join SAG through the Taft-Hartley Act, which makes it possible for an actor to work on a SAG-recognized project for 30 days, even if he or she is not a member. An actor may be able to join SAG if he or she can prove that they have worked or are expected to work on a SAG-recognized project. Actors may be able to join SAG if they can prove that they have been a member of another actor union, such as the Actors’ Equity Association, and they have had a lead (principal) role while a member of that union.
